My Samantha is about 16 years old now and she has a bit of silver in her eye. Her eyes are discoloring and becoming a grayish color and I was wondering if anyone knew if there is anyway to prevent this discoloration from happening from the newer dolls. I want my dolls to last for many more years, but am affraid they will start to develop "silver eye".

How strange. I have been dealing with MLP for amny many years and the "Beddy bye eyes" have never had that. or not that I have noticed. Have you seen this before in other dolls too?

My grandma's old Kirsten doll has soemthing sort of similar. One of her eyes has a little round clear disc over the pupil, it looks like a tiny contact lense. It didn't use to be that way, but grandma had her laying in her box in the closet for years, so that was probably it.
I dont know what causes silver eye but I know a few things to keep dolls better...keep them in a breathable area, not always stuck in their boxes or in closets or whatever. They should not be under heat or light all the time. Also be sure water doesn't get into their eye sockets. They should not be in a very dry area or a very moist area either, the temperature should be even. And, don't have them always laying down OR always standing up, I remember somebody here said the little mechanism that moves their eyes needs to shift or it will start not working as well.
I don't know if any of that will help prevent silver eye but it might? Either way, it wil keep the doll nicer.

Thanks, Betsy. I didn't know about having them lay down and sit up evenly! Your ideas sound great and I will try them.

Thanks Emily. But the idea of having them lay down and stand up evenly actually wasn't really my idea. I wish I could remember who said that! Whoever it was, thnak you!

With the constant moving of the dolls when kids have them that is probasbly why so many of the dolls are always in such good shape.Really when you think about it there are a lot of them available on ebay when you think about the marketing behind the dolls.
Have to wonder if this is the reason you see so many dolls on ebay that the sellers are saying one eye is discoloured.
it is interesting though.....
I am glad you posted about it. You all have such interesting things to read about in this forum
How way cool.

My Addy got silver eye from just sitting on the floor in my bedroom. I didn't play with her all that much, so maybe there's something to the movement idea. Also, this was in Scottsdale, AZ, which is rather dry. So maybe it was a dryness thing? The thing is, she was one of at least 7 dolls hanging around my room and the only one to develop a silver eye. So that makes think it is in deed a defect and possibly not preventable.
Also, I think there are two kinds of eyes that AG dolls have. One looks like a mold that makes the pattern in the eye. The other looks like the pattern is on printed paper in the eye. If I had a clear digital camera I would take pictures of the differences. I think only the molded version can develop silver eye. Just a theory. My Samantha was purchased in '89, and Addy when she came out. Sam's original eyes are still holding up just fine. They are the printed kind.

I know what you mean about the printed/molded eyes. My Elyssa (agot) and my Felciity both have green eyes and they are the printed kind. I think it looks a lot different then the molded kind- the molded kind looks more real.

Yes, I agree the molded kind looks more real. However, my Sam has the printed eye kind and she developed silver eye.

You guys...I'm so depressed! I went and checked my childhood Kirsten, and she has silver eye in her left one! AND my AGOT is getting it too! Needless to say, I took the advice of others and all my dolls are lying down sleeping right now. But my sister's Sam and AGOT which we got at the same time don't. Life's not being fair and it depresses me.
